ISO 9000 2008 OR ISO 9001 2008

Many people are still confused regarding recent revision of international standard ISO 9001.

Many people believe that ISO 9000 : 2000 is now ISO 9000 : 2008 but this is not true. ISO 9000 is a generic term used for ISO 9000 series of standards. When ISO 9000 series was revised in year 2000 all the three standards (ISO 9000, ISO 9001, ISO 9004) were revised.

The certification is given only for ISO 9001 but it was acceptable to call ISO 9000: 2000 certified or ISO 9001: 2000 certified.

Over the period of years ISO 9000 (the standard not the whole series) was revised in 2005 and it became ISO 9000: 2005 instead of ISO 9000: 2000.

ISO 9001 is now revised in 2008 and it has become ISO 9001: 2008. It is therefore not advisable to use the term ISO 9000: 2008 certified company as there is no such standard.
